Un Alejandro Otero monumental llega a la galería Odalys de Madrid
El sábado, a las 11:00 am, hora española, se inaugurará la exposición «Otero monumental» con dibujos, maquetas y esculturas nunca antes exhibidos.
Junto con Carlos Cruz-Diez y Jesús Soto. Alejandro Otero es uno de los puntales del arte del siglo XX en Venezuela y el mundo. Singular exponente de la abstracción geométrica, este artista, nacido en El Manteco, estado Bolívar, el 7 de marzo de 1921, orientó su quehacer artístico hacia la búsqueda permanente de nuevas posibilidades plásticas, de novedosas formas de expresión en las que confluyeran la ciencia y el arte.
Sin embargo, en su obra cívica, o monumental, se cumple a rajatabla lo que Otero declaró en una entrevista realizada para la revista cultural Arsterisco: «A mí no me define el interés por lo tecnológico, o lo científico, sino por la temática en cuanto a las posibilidades y las conquistas científicas y tecnológicas que ha hecho el hombre y han provocado el avance de la humanidad».
Es por ello que cuando en 1971 recibió la beca Guggenheim para profundizar su investigación acerca del color, el movimiento, el agua, la luz y el arte, se marchó al Instituto de Tecnología de Massachusetts (M.I.T, por sus siglas en inglés) ávido de conectar con el conocimiento científico más avanzado, pero sin apartar de su mente y su corazón la exuberante naturaleza de su niñez, en especial, el sol incandescente de El Manteco, el caudal de los ríos Orinoco y Caroní, y la permanente ventisca del lugar.
Allí, en el M.I.T, Otero desarrolló sus esculturas orbitales a escala urbana, de las que a partir del sábado será expuesta en la galería Odalys Madrid (calle Orfila 5, 28010) una selección inédita de dibujos, maquetas y esculturas en la exposición Otero monumental, con la que el Grupo Odalys y la Fundación Otero-Pardo inician la celebración del centenario del nacimiento del creador de los Coloritmos.
Los dibujos y maquetas presentes en la muestra, y realizados entre 1969 y 1987, son un testimonio de las motivaciones, intereses y ambiciones creativas de Alejandro Otero, en el contexto de su investigación en torno a la escultura y al sentido del arte de su tiempo.
Sobre su experiencia en el M.I.T, dijo Otero: «Cuando trabajaba en el Centro para Estudios Visuales Avanzados, de M.I.T., tomé el Charles River como punto de partida para el diseño de algunas esculturas. En el caso específico de éstas a las que me estoy refiriendo, su amplitud frente a la Universidad, la lentitud de su corriente casi paralizada por efecto de un dique, el viento que sopla a menudo violento sobre el agua, la luz del sol a la caída de la tarde y, en gran medida, la contaminación misma del río. Los resultados fueron una familia de criaturas desgreñadas que debían desplazarse enloquecidas por la superficie del agua».
Otero monumental estará abierta al público hasta el 25 de abril, en horarios de martes a sábado,
de 11:00 a 14:00 y de 15:00 a 20:00.

Otero Monumental opens this Saturday, February 22, at 11:00 am, Spanish time. The exhibition encompasses drawings, models and sculptures never before exhibited by the Venezuelan Master Alejandro Otero.
Along with Carlos Cruz-Diez and Jesús Soto. Alejandro Otero is widely considered one of the Masters of Twentieth-Century Art, and one of the first proponents of geometric abstraction in his native country of Venezuela. Alejandro Otero was born in El Manteco, in the State of Bolívar, on March 7, 1921. Over his career, Otero continuously explored new forms of visual expression, and held a special interest in novel forms of expression that combined science and art.
Regarding his civic or monumental-scale work, Otero once made a statement during an interview published in the cultural magazine Asterisco that has been fulfilled: “I cannot be defined by my interest in technology, or science; rather I am interested in the potential subject matter and the possibilities brought about by the kind of scientific and technological advances that continue to move humanity forward.”
When the artist was awarded a Guggenheim Scholarship in 1971, to deepen his research on color, movement, water, light and art, he spent some time at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he connected with the most advanced scientific knowledge of his time, while also reflecting on the contrasts and connections between his new environment and the exuberant natural setting of his childhood (the incandescent sun of El Manteco, the flow of the Orinoco and Caroní Rivers, and the tumbling winds of his home).
While at MIT, Otero developed his urban-scale Orbital Sculptures, some of which will be on exhibit at the Odalys Gallery in Madrid on February 22, 2020 (Orfila street 5, 28010). The exhibition also includes an unpublished selection of drawings, models and sculptures, brought together by the Odalys Group, the Fundación Artesano Group and the Otero Pardo Foundation as a way to kick off a Celebration to mark the 100- Year Anniversary of Otero’s birth on March 7.
The drawings and models in the exhibition, created between 1969 and 1987, are a testament to the motivation, interests and creative ambitions of Alejandro Otero, within the context of his research on sculpture, and the art of his time.
Regarding his experience at MIT, Otero said: “When I was working at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT, I focused on the Charles River as a starting point for the design of some sculptures. I am referring to specific things like the river’s width in front of the University; the slow movement of its current, which becomes almost paralyzed by the effect of a dam; the wind that often blows violently on the water; the sunlight toward the end of the afternoon and, even to a large extent, the degree of pollution of the river. The outcome was a collection of rumpled creatures that were forced to move wildly over the surface of the water. ”
Otero Monumental (Monumental Otero) will be open to the public until April 25, 2020, during the following hours: Tuesday through Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
